Scuba diving in Cozumel gives a one-of-a-kind experience to divers. The beautiful underwater world is amazing to explore and once you are there, no other diving location will seem thrilling enough. One of the best parts of diving in this area of Mexico is the different types of sharks that you might encounter during your dive. If you are planning to take a trip to Cozumel, keep on reading to know what it has in store for you.

However, before we begin discussing the variety of sharks that you might encounter in Cozumel, it is important to understand that your entire diving experience will depend on which diving shop you get registered with. Since Cozumel is popular amongst divers, there are many different diving shops in the region, but of course, some are better than others.

One such diving shop is Salty Endeavors. They are a premiere Cozumel dive shop and their entire staff is passionate about scuba diving. They provide exceptional services and try to pass their love, knowledge, and enthusiasm for scuba diving to their clients. While working with them, you can book yourself in Cozumel Palace all inclusive resort. Along with amazing packages, they offer a very pampering experience to divers.

Different types of sharks in Cozumel

Cozumel Nurse Sharks

The Cozumel area has plenty of nurse sharks. Also, they are not very migratory sharks and thus you can experience the sensation of diving with them around the year. You will mostly encounter Nurse sharks in Cozumel about 5-8ft long. Nevertheless, some have grown extraordinarily in size, say about 13-14ft in length.

These sharks are safe to be around. They are harmless to scuba divers and are quite sleek and graceful. Then again, don’t forget, they do have rows of sharp and pointy teeth. If confronted aggressively, they might react violently in self-defense. Along with Cozumel, they are even encountered in Cuba, Florida, and other dive sites in the Caribbean.

Black-tip reef shark

The second most common type of shark that you will encounter in Cozumel is the Black-tip reef. They are mostly spotted in small packs on the southernmost dive sites. They seem to feel more comfortable in certain areas of the reef and thus spend weeks there.

Bull Sharks

Last but not the least, Bull sharks are spotted and attract a lot of attention in the Cozumel area as well. They are large, pretty brave, and look a lot meaner. They resemble their smaller-sized cousin – the Great white shark. As per National Geographic, they are one of the most aggressive types of sharks and are expected to attack humans.

Now, this might seem scary, but there is nothing to worry about. If you are in Cozumel during the right time, you can comfortably dive in controlled diving spots like Playa del Carmen. As far as Bull sharks are concerned, they usually tend to make an appearance during winters – say between December and February.

Well, now if you are all set to plan a diving trip to Cozumel, be rest assured the trip will be worth it. Don’t forget to get in touch with Salty Endeavors via their Instagram Profile page.
